Welcome!

This is the second meeting of the Scottish Linked Data Interest Group.  In response to the growing interest around Linked Data, a few of us (Paola di Maio, Jeff Pan, Bill Roberts, Edward Thomas) working in this area in Scotland decided it would be good to have a series of meet-ups devoted to the topic. Our concept for the meetings is:

  • an emphasis on connecting different groups: people who have data to share, people who want to use data and people with tools for working with linked data. We want to help them to work together to achieve great things
  • a roughly 50/50 split of presentations and time for discussions and networking, in an informal friendly atmosphere
  • rotate the venue around the main cities of Scotland so we share out the travelling and access a big enough group of people to make the meetups work
  • meetings roughly four times a year

The meetings are free and open to anyone.  Because the venue has limited capacity and to help with planning we'd like to know how many people are coming, so please register for the event here.

Programme

Wednesday, 6th October

6.30-7.15pm Arrival and refreshments

7.15-8.30 Presentations

Peter Winstanley, Scottish Government: Linked Closed Data

Linked Data principles can provide an excellent framework for marshalling and integrating datasets within an enterprise.  This presentation will provide illustrations from within the Scottish Government showing how the development of a framework of stable URIs can provide the basis for a queryable linked data framework from which various data can be merged and 'social' networks can be identified and analysed.

Edward Thomas, University of Aberdeen: Linked Data and Aberdeen

Edward will introduce the basic concepts behind linked data and give an overview of the aims and objectives of the Interest Group, and summarise the last meeting and the actions which have taken place since then. He will also review the local research activities at the University of Aberdeen, including the TrOWL lightweight reasoning system.

Richard Goodwin, TSO: Developing Infrastructure for the Linked Data Revolution

TSO is working to build an infrastructure for public sector linked data development. Both as part of the Making Public Data Public programme and from its own resources. Initiatives to date include the Data Enrichment Service, a queryable triplestore containing a range of public sector datasets  and linked data APIs. Information on all of these can be found on http://gov.tso.co.uk/openup/index.

8.15 - 10.00  Networking and discussion. Soft drinks, beer, and pizza!

Location

The event will take place in Aberdeen, in the lobby of the Meston Building, at the University of Aberdeen. Free parking is available at the University and in surrounding streets.
